Russia

We had a small group at Culture Club for the month of April. We had a lovely time, despite the small crowd. The kids did an excellent job on all of their presentations. We learned about Faberge eggs, Russian dance, native horses and Russian national landmarks. Most of the children are doing power point presentations now.

We shared a lovely and hearty meal after the presentations. The food was delicious!

Brazil

We had a wonderful time studying Brazil. Since it was time for Carnival in Brazil, we decided to have a little celebration of our own. The kids made masks with all kinds of mixed media. They had a wonderful time. Some parents decorated the hall. One mother brought necklaces for everyone to wear. Some of the kids even dressed up for the occasion. It was all very festive.

The kids shared some super presentations on everything from an overview of Brazil to the animals of Brazil. The kids are steadily improving in their public speaking skills. It is great to see.

We had a lovely meal. One family brought a Kings Cake. It was so much fun to see who got the baby.

One of the students led us through a lovely line dance from Brazil.

I am not sure the video is working ~ let me know in the comments if you can see it.

We wrapped up the day with a memorable interview via Skype with a man who grew up in Brazil. He was really wonderful, and we loved talking to him.

Madagascar

Our Culture Club "traveled" to Madagascar in January. There were really great displays. One family played a style of Jeopardy which was really popular with all of the children. It was a great review of all that we had learned. There were presentations on Ylang Ylang perfume, the Baba tree, the leaf nose snake, chameleons, the ring rail lemur, Aye-Aye, crocodiles, and rice. One member performed a lovely dance from Madagascar and another brought in hissing cockroaches for all to see. It was a great learning experience.

There were many varieties of great food choices. The kids and adults really enjoy the fellowship after the presentations.

Australia

We had a wonderful Asheville Homeschool Culture Club this month. We studied Australia. The kids presented on a wide range of topics. The topics were as follows ~
  • Platypus (two presentations)
  • Wombat
  • Northern Territory
  • Australia Day ~ January 26
  • The Great Barrier Reef
  • Introduction on the animals of Australia with a song
  • Origins of the people of Australia and a story about Aborigines

There was a large variety of food this time as well. Three people brought Damper bread, which is native to Australia. There were wonderful soup, egg and ham, and shrimp on the barbie dishes! There was also a lovely desert with kiwi and cream.

We look forward to next time when we will be learning about Madagascar.
